Happy New Year! As the holidays are coming to an end, resolutions and goal setting are top of mind with this blank slate we are given each January. We are all asking ourselves how we can improve on last year and do things that we have always wanted to do. January is one of the most exciting months of the year because of all the possibilities and hope.
One of our goals this year at Performance Medicine is to continue to help people improve their total health, and one of the ways we do that is through weight management. As you all know, there are a ton of great diets out there that truly do work if you stick to them. Today, I want to talk about a few ideas that might be new or different, but could really change the way you think about what you eat.
Have you ever heard of ketosis?
Ketosis is a metabolic situation that you can bring about in your body by eating a very low carbohydrate, moderate protein, high fat diet. The product of eating this way is your body starts to burn fat instead of glucose as your energy source. This is important because when you burn fat instead of glucose you produce something called ketones, which is a more efficient source of energy. If you have ever experienced a sugar high and a sugar low then you know what I am talking about. This has literally changed the way we think about weight management at Performance Medicine.
If your body has the choice, it will always choose to burn sugar first instead of fat. That is essentially why we get and stay fat, because our body is burning off sugar and the fat stays with us! And with today’s food, there is no shortage of sugar in our diets, which is why sometimes ( or a lot of the time!) it feels like we just can’t get rid of fat on our bodies. The whole point of getting on a ketogenic diet is to get your body to burn fat. This is a lifestyle change that keeps weight off, which has always been the tough part.
Key Take Aways
We have to understand that what we have been told about eating a low fat diet is wrong, and it actually could be making you fat! Don’t avoid any fat unless it is a trans fat. Eat minimal amounts of carbohydrates. This is hard, but you have to limit the amount of carbohydrates you take in. Remember what we said about our bodies burning sugar first? Well, carbohydrates turn into sugar….
Some common questions we get about ketosis is how do you know when your body is in this state? The simple answer is through a blood test. We check for this in all of our offices, so make sure the next time you are in be sure to ask us about it!
