How To Treat Respiratory Illnesses

Welcome to another edition of the Doctor’s Note where we talk about what’s on our minds when it comes to your health.

As the colder months roll in, it’s not unusual to see a surge in respiratory illnesses sweeping through our communities. Whether it’s the flu, a common cold, or COVID-19, these ailments can be both debilitating and concerning. A timely opportunity to share some tried and true methods for treating respiratory illnesses. Believe me, it’s out there!

I just recently recovered from a respiratory illness myself and in the middle of that misery decided to record what I was doing to proactively treat my symptoms. I firmly believe in treating EARLY in order to PREVENT complications, and EXPEDITE recovery. Check out this episode (ignore the coughs!) to learn how you can boost your immune system to stay healthier this winter.

PODCAST NOTES

  • Importance of Early Treatment: One of the main things I can’t stress enough is the importance of treating respiratory illnesses early. I’ve seen too many people wait too long, and it either results in pneumonia or them being miserable for weeks. You’ve got to nip it in the bud as soon as symptoms start to show. Early intervention is key to quicker recovery and keeping those complications at bay.

  • Role of Comprehensive Testing: In my practice, we utilize comprehensive testing to guide our treatment decisions. Whether it’s flu, COVID-19, strep, or RSV, knowing what you’re up against early can steer the course of action. I believe in testing for influenza because it opens the door to treatments like Tamiflu, especially when caught within the first 48 hours. Getting a clear picture early on is half the battle.

  • Effectiveness of Z-Paks (Azithromycin): Let’s talk about Z-Paks. From my personal and clinical experience, I can tell you that starting a Z-Pak around day two or three has been a lifesaver. It’s turned my illness around countless times, and I’ve seen it work for my patients as well. Note: I also love Ivermectin and Methylene Blue

  • Natural Remedies and Supplements: I’m all about boosting the immune system naturally too. High doses of Vitamin D and Vitamin C are staples, along with immune boosting supplements like Zinc, Quercetin, and NAC (N-Acetylcysteine). These aren’t just random picks, they’re the real deal in helping your body fight off illnesses faster. It’s part of a holistic approach to getting better. Check out my Immune Formula here

  • Alternative and Adjunctive Treatments: For supportive therapy, I love infrared saunas. They are great for sweating out the illness. Even when I’m sick I keep up with light physical activities. Nothing heavy, just enough to keep my body moving. IV Therapy is another gem, especially something like the Myers Cocktail. It’s a powerful mix of vitamins and minerals that can give you a huge boost when you’re feeling down.

  • Patient-Centered Care Philosophy: Medicine should be a partnership. I strongly believe this. I make a point to work closely with my patients, making sure their treatment decisions fit their personal history and preferences. It’s important to remember that you know your body best. My role is to provide expert advice and options, but the final decision should always involve you.

  • Follow-Up and Adjusting Treatment: If things aren’t improving after the initial treatment, we’ve got plenty of options. Sometimes an extra boost with a Celestone steroid shot or a Rocephin antibiotic shot can make a big difference. And if needed, we can go for further diagnostic tests like chest X-Rays to get to the bottom of it. Monitoring your symptoms closely and being prepared to adjust the treatment plan is crucial. The goal is to get you feeling better as quickly as possible.

So to wrap it up, prompt and proactive care is key to your recovery and overall well-being. Period. Exclamation mark! Don’t wait until your symptoms worsen! Get ahead of it by combining conventional and natural remedies to nip it in the bud.

Whether it’s high dose vitamins, immune support, or targeted medical treatments like a Z-Pak and Celestone, the aim is to prevent complications like pneumonia, and to keep those miserable, drawn-out periods of illness at bay.

Next time you or a loved one feels that first tickle of respiratory illness, remember the sooner the better. Consult your healthcare provider immediately (or you can do telemedicine with us) to develop a treatment plan that’s right for you.

Stay vigilant, stay informed, and listen to your body.

Till next week.
