Sensational After Sixty

Welcome to another edition of the Doctor’s Note where we talk about what’s on our minds when it comes to your health.

This week on the podcast I had a patient/friend, Donna Lampkins, stop by to talk about living sensationally after the age of 60! Donna is a real estate broker in Kingsport, Tennessee who was on my podcast five years ago sharing her path to feeling young again at age 60.

In today’s conversation we revisit her inspiring journey as she embraces the power of hormone therapy and a mindful lifestyle to stay vibrant at 65. From tackling misconceptions about aging to her exciting plans for a new podcast aimed at empowering women, Donna continues to redefine what it means to age gracefully.

PODCAST NOTES

  • Donna speaks passionately about how starting on hormone therapy, particularly bioidentical hormones (delivered through pellets), was a game-changer for her. She explained how it not only boosted her energy levels and cognitive function but also improved her skin and hair health. In the podcast, I reference a comprehensive study that indicates hormone therapy for women aged 65-85 results in significantly fewer heart attacks, hip fractures, breast cancer cases, and incidences of dementia. This underscores the critical role of hormone management in aging well.

  • We both place a high value on regular physical activity as a means of maintaining cognitive health and overall physical well-being. Exercise is identified as one of the most effective ways to prevent cognitive decline as one ages. It’s crucial for maintaining cognitive abilities and preventing diseases like dementia.

  • Donna’s story about winning a local “Dancing with the Stars” competition at the age of 60 is a testament to the fact that age should not limit one’s pursuits and passions. She highlights that staying active, whether through dance or other forms of physical activity, can significantly contribute to a more vibrant and fulfilling life.

  • A recurrent theme in our discussion is the importance of embracing a positive mindset about aging. Donna talks about not letting age define her, sharing her excitement for continuously pursuing new goals and projects, such as starting her own podcast to help other women stay sensational after 60. I think people should aim to make their 60s and beyond the best decades of their life due to the maturity and established life experiences they bring.

  • Women often neglect their own health while taking care of their families. That’s why I’m so passionate about routine health assessments and blood work to monitor hormone levels, vitamin levels, and other health metrics. It’s important to go beyond conventional annual check ups by doing comprehensive panels like the Cleveland Heart Panel to get a fuller picture of your health.

  • We talked about the unique health concerns that women face, especially as they age. There is a higher prevalence of dementia among women and hormone therapy can help mitigate such risks. Donna and I both feel that societal roles often put women in caretaker positions, which might lead them to neglect their own health, thereby making proactive health management even more crucial.

  • Self induced stress and anxiety are as detrimental to health as other toxins. It is important to address mental health proactively, whether through professional help or self-reflection, and reduce unnecessary stressors from life.

  • There is so much value in being straightforward and honest. Simple living, both personally and professionally is key. Donna explained that her success in real estate comes from being transparent and relational with her clients, steering away from over-promising and under-delivering. Sounds like common sense to me! Just like in medicine, spending time with patients to get the most accurate diagnosis and treatment, and not hesitating to think outside the box, is what people want and need!

Aging well after 60 is about more than just managing the physical changes that come with time. It’s about embracing a holistic approach to health, which includes proper hormone therapy, regular exercise, balanced nutrition, effective stress management, and genuine kindness.

As Donna’s journey illustrates, feeling good on the inside can significantly influence how you look and feel on the outside. Her testimony reminds us to make use of the knowledge and resources available, trust the process, and know that you have the power to redefine aging.

It’s never too late to make positive changes and start prioritizing yourself - because staying sensational after 60 isn’t just a goal, it’s a vibrant and attainable way of life.

Stay educated. Stay healthy.

Till next week.
