Toning Your Body

Welcome everyone to another edition of the Doctor’s Note where we talk about what’s on our minds when it comes to your health.

As you know, my goal is to help people age in a healthy way through nutrition, exercise, sleep, and hormone optimization. But an essential part of aging well is also looking and feeling great about yourself. In this week’s podcast, I wanted to talk about a fascinating aesthetic treatment we offer that can help target those stubborn areas of fat that just won’t budge, even with weight loss. It’s a non-invasive technology that can melt fat cells and tighten skin without pain or downtime. I asked my daughter, Kelli Rogers, LE, who heads up our aesthetic department, to explain how it works and the results she’s seen. If you have trouble spots that are resistant to diet and exercise, you’ll definitely want to learn more about this incredible body contouring option. Let’s dive in!

PODCAST NOTES

  • Performance Medicine takes a comprehensive approach to helping people age well, combining health optimization through nutrition, weight management, exercise, sleep, hormone balancing, and aesthetic treatments to address skin and body concerns. This medical and holistic strategy helps patients feel and look their best as they age.

  • Two highly effective technologies for targeted fat reduction are the PHYSIQ (using laser energy), and the EVOLVE (using radiofrequency). These treatments can address stubborn fat pockets that resist diet and exercise, such as the midsection, back, arms, and thighs. As you know, it’s virtually impossible to “spot” reduce some areas of fat, no matter what you do diet or exercise wise. This is a good, safe way to do it. Patients find the treatments comfortable and non-painful. Note: Yes, there are surgical treatments (like liposuction, etc.,), but they can be invasive, painful, and expensive. I’m not against these treatments, but I would consider other ways first.

  • The PHYSIQ laser features an SDM (super luminescent diode matrix) applicator that debulks fat deposits, while the EVOLVE has an EMS  (electric muscle stimulation) mode that produces forced muscle contractions to tone the treated areas. The two technologies can be used separately or in combination to treat multiple body areas in the same session.

  • Patients typically notice visible results after 2-3 treatments, with optimal outcomes seen 1-3 months after completing a recommended series of 6 sessions. Rather than focusing on weight loss on the scale, the goal of these treatments is to reduce inches and improve body contours.

  • For concerns like crepey skin and cellulite, we offer Deep Virtue RF microneedling treatments designed for use on the body. This is also a great option for reducing a double chin, and offers results comparable to injectable treatments like Kybella (without the associated swelling and downtime).

  • To support the results of in-office body contouring treatments, Kelli recommends using a specialized topical product called Body Firm that helps dehydrate fat cells. Massaging this lotion into problem areas once or twice daily can enhance the outcome. She stresses the importance of good quality skincare for the body, not just the face.

  • While GLP-1 agonist injections like Semaglutide and Tirzepatide are game changing tools for medically supervised weight loss, they are best for receiving overall body fat rather than spot reduction. These aesthetic devices provide a perfect complement to address loose skin and stubborn fat bulges that may remain after weight loss.

  • Always remember, proper nutrition, collagen supplements, protein, and resistance training are all necessary to get your body toned. When you exercise and build muscle, that’s the most important thing you can do for toning.

  • One of the most important factors for success with any body contouring or weight loss regimen is maintaining a positive mindset and practicing encouraging self talk. Kelli emphasizes that the body believes the messages you tell it, so avoiding negative comments about your appearance can help you attain the results you desire.

If you’re struggling with stubborn areas of fat that just won’t budge no matter how much you diet and exercise, know that there are options! A positive attitude is key. Your body will listen to what you tell it, so stay encouraged! If you want to learn more about these options, check out the full episode on YouTube!

Stay educated. Stay healthy.

Till next week.
