Morning everyone!
Welcome to another edition of the Doctor’s Note, where we talk about what’s on our minds when it comes to your health.
Today we’re going to be talking about a vitamin that I’ve been taking for quite some time, and it’s actually an amazing prophylactic for COVID-19. It’s a vitamin that everyone should be taking, and that’s Quercetin.
If you look at any of the COVID-19 treatments out there, Quercetin is going to be there.
I’ll be honest, I’ve been taking Quercetin for a long time and didn’t know exactly why I was taking it. Except that I knew it was a great antioxidant, it’s antiviral, and you take it along with Vitamin C.
I’ve been researching it a lot this year, and I’ve found some really cool stuff about it. I’ll be taking it for the rest of my life.
I found out some more amazing uses and benefits of Quercetin that I want to share with you in this Note. But first, let’s talk about what Quercetin is.
Quercetin
Quercetin is a flavonoid, which means it’s a pigment from plants and food. It can be found in onions, red grapes (wine), coffee, tea, berries (especially blueberries), grains, and fruits.
It’s been found that coffee may help in preventing Alzheimer’s. It’s actually not the caffeine in coffee that’s preventative, it’s because of the Quercetin in it. That’s a fact I didn’t know.
Quercetin is probably the most abundant antioxidant in your body.
When we talk about antioxidants, what happens in your body is you have a lot of free radical damage. As you get older your body “rusts” and takes insults from nature. You have these electrons flying around, and they like to pair up. The damaged electrons like to pick up other electrons, and steal them from your good cells. It destabilizes the good cell, and makes it more vulnerable to things like cancer.
This is called oxidative stress. Oxygen is good, but it can be bad also.
So you need antioxidants in your diet, and Quercetin is a great one for you.
Benefits Of Taking Quercetin
Reduces inflammation
Lowers blood pressure
May prevent cancer (Lung, Breast, Prostate, Ovarian, Liver, Colon)
Helps in preventing the degeneration of your brain (i.e. Alzheimer’s)
Increases exercise performance
Helps protect you from heart disease
Most likely reduces blood sugar and will help control and prevent diabetes
Athletes even take it to prevent soreness.
They did a big study in women who have Rheumatoid Arthritis, and in almost everyone Quercetin reduced stiffness and post activity pain.
It can even be used in treating allergies, because it blocks histamine.
Typical dose is between 500-1000mg. It’s not very bioavailable, which means you need something to take it with to help it absorb better. Taking it with Vitamin C makes it more absorbable. You can also take it with Bromelain.
How to take Quercetin
Antiviral: Quercetin with Vitamin C
Anticancer: Quercetin with Curcumin or Turmeric
Side effects:
There are very few side effects. In my research the only thing I can come up with is that you wouldn’t want to take more than 1000mg per day for long periods of time. You would want to take a break from it.
You wouldn’t want to take it if you’re on Coumadin, which is a potent blood thinner. It might prolong bleeding time.
If you’re taking an antibiotic like Levaquin or Cipro, you probably wouldn’t want to take Quercetin with it. It could possibly make the antibiotic less effective.
Anti Covid-19 Regimen:
Vitamin C
Vitamin D
Zinc
Quercetin (I’m taking an extra one of these right now)
Put this in your medicine cabinet now.
